George Hines of Rhome read a recent article about the state hiring a Spanish consortium to build a $6 billion toll road connecting the Metroplex to San Antonio. He wanted to know how the speed limit on the Trans -Texas Corridor could be 85 mph while freeways could be no faster than 65 mph.
"Will they have a vacuum system that will remove the smog from this toll road?" he asked in an e-mail.
Actually, the 65 mph speed limit only covers the immediate Dallas-Fort Worth area, which is in violation of federal clean-air laws and must take steps to reduce emissions. Houston has similar speed limits.
The Trans -Texas Corridor will mostly bypass large cities. In rural areas, higher speeds are allowed.
