AUSTIN — On the night that has become known as the Friday Night Massacre, coup plotters unsuccessfully tried to oust Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick from office on May 25, 2007.
As the night dragged on House Democratic Caucus Chair Jim Dunnam pressed Craddick on why the leader would not recognize his critics for a motion to oust him.
Parliamentarians Ron Wilson and Terry Keel, both former House members, had suddenly appeared as Craddick's new rules advisors shortly after his long time parliamentarians resigned in protest.
Dunnam: Do you recognize any member of this Chamber for us for a motion to elect an impartial Parliamentarian?
Craddick: That's not authorized by House rules.
Dunnam: Well, I would like to suspend the rules and offer such a motion.
Craddick: You're not recognized for that.
Dunnam: Mr. Speaker, can we appeal that ruling?
Craddick: You're not recognized for that ruling, for that motion.
Dunnam: Does anyone's voice in this Chamber matter but yours?
Craddick: We're going to follow the House rules.
Dunnam: ... And Mr. Keel's?
Craddick: We're going to follow the House rules.
We're going to follow the House rules.
Dunnam: ... And Mr. Wilson's? We're going to follow House rules? When?
